Full Job Description

The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical support to a librarian by performing a wide variety of public and technical services. The incumbent may serve as the principal assistant to the base librarian and substitute as the employee-in-charge in the absence of the librarian. Under the direction of the librarian, the incumbent will oversee library procurement/acquisitions process. Will provide ready reference services to library clientele by locating bibliographic information using standard library reference tools such as guides, indexes, bibliographies, professional directories, etc. You will administer the day-to-day operation of the circulation desk by resolving problems in registration, overdue books, circulation, loans, damage, or loss of materials surfaced by lower-level technicians, develop work schedules and ensures sufficient coverage of reception and circulation desk. Lastly, will also use a varied and advanced functions of word processing software to prepare,
format, modify, edit, and print a variety of letters, reports, memos, and other textual documents.,

  • Hours of work: 0800-1630 Mon-Thu including one shift a week 0900-1730, alternate Sat & Sun 0800-1600, Start & end times may be modified due to mission needs and in accordance with organization's flexible working policies.

  • Will be required to handle and safeguard sensitive information in accordance with applicable US and UK laws, rules, and regulations.

  • Must obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance.

  • May be assigned other duties that are appropriate to the grade and skill set of the employee.

  • May be required to travel by military and/or civilian aircraft in the performance of official duties or attend necessary training. Position may be coded as mission essential.

  • A 6-12-month probationary period will be required.

  • Overtime may be required.

  • May be required to travel overnight to US or other countries in the performance of official duties or attend necessary train.


  • Other significant facts pertaining to this position are:

    1. The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

    2. Employee is in charge of the branch in the absence of the librarian. Opens and secures the building at these times in accordance with the security checklist, reporting unusual problems or occurrences to the librarian. When working alone, opens and/or closes the library and starts up and/or shuts down computer systems and LANs. Trains and assists lower grade employees in library procedures.

    3. Ability to type a minimum of 40 WPM is highly desirable.

    4. The Local National Direct Hire (LNDH) Program does not participate in regular drug testing, however positions covered by this document may be subject to drug testing upon reasonable suspicion of substance abuse, and safety mishap or accident testing.

    We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join a premier team of Library Technicians at 423 Force Support Squadron, Royal Air Force Alconbury, United Kingdom., 1. Knowledge of a body of standardized library rules, procedures, and operations related to one or more library functions such as those used to maintain the collection, locate information, order and process library materials, or assist clientele with inquiries; and library operating policies, circulation procedures, ready reference sources, issuance and cancellation of borrower cards, and resolving recurring problems such as lost or damaged books or magazines.

    2. Knowledge of several interlibrary loan sources and standard verification and request procedures to locate and borrow items where requests are frequently incomplete or contain incorrect citations.

    3. Knowledge of programs in a general library to conduct special events, locate materials for exhibits on a given theme, and prepare announcements of events and programs for bulletin boards and employee newsletters.

    4. Knowledge of one or more automated databases associated with a specific library function to support office and library operations and produce a variety of documents and reports.

    5. Ability to prepare, verify, and process material acquisition documents within budget guidelines, comparing prices and services offered by competing vendors.

    6. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a diverse group of individuals, using a high degree of tact and diplomacy.
