Full Job Description

The Apprentice will be part of the departmental Facilities team and will study the PMO level 2 qualification. You will learn on the job and will contribute to the maintenance tasks of the team.

Below is a non-exhaustive list of what you will gain from the apprenticeship:

  • Learn basic skills of area of work (e.g. use of basic workshop tools and machinery), under the supervision of supervisor or allocated staff member

  • Work more independently on elements of a project or task, referring all decisions to supervisor, applying new skills as appropriate

  • Under supervision, be involved with the general maintenance of the fabric of the building, including painting, minor carpentry work, installation of benching and flooring. The work can be part of a larger lab refurbishment or the remodelling of individual rooms including stripping out and some carpentry

  • Under the supervision the role holder will undertake preventive maintenance tasks such as air filters and drive belt changes, water temperature checks and fume hood inspections

  • Understand common hazards and basic health and safety and fire risks and their mitigation) within the working environment. Learn and abide by standard operating procedures and risk assessments. (E.g. workshop safety or chemical safety) Understand and abide by basic department or institution working practices (leave, hours of work, procurement, etc.


  • The training you will be getting

    The practical training period of the Property Maintenance Operative Level 2 Apprenticeship is the time dedicated to the development of the knowledge, skills, and behaviours for which includes the following components:
  • A Property Maintenance Operative Apprenticeship at Level 2

  • On-programme assignments and practical assessments

  • Workplace portfolio of evidence
  • English and maths at Level 2 must be achieved

  • Day release at Cambridge campus and working alongside qualified, friendly and a small team of professionally trained/ experienced in Property Maintenance


  • The apprentice would be assigned an assessor through the college, who would typically come out to visit in the workplace to assess workplace competence.

    The knowledge side would be provided via day release attendance, assignments, evidence of workplace competence. Portfolio would be checked via an online Smart Assessor.

    Communication skills, Attention to detail, Organisation skills, Problem solving skills, Logical, Team working, GCSE or equivalent English (Grade 3/D) Essential
    GCSE or equivalent Maths (Grade 3/D) Essential, Due to the active nature of this role, the role holder should have a good level of physical fitness.
