As part of the Engineering team, you will report directly to the Site Service and Engineering Manager or Managing Director-Prepared & Salads in their absence. The working hours will be 4 on 4 off 12 hr shifts on a rotating of 2-day shift and 2-night shift based on your rota located in the maintenance file.

There may be times when you are requested to work additional hours, to provide support and cover for colleagues during absences, including longer working periods, weekends and bank holidays

The primary responsibilities of this position are listed below. However, the Site Head Engineer or any Manager at PDM may request you to fulfil extra duties in line with your job responsibilities.

Primary Responsibilities

The Shift / PPM Engineer will conduct both reactive and preventative maintenance duties to a variety of food based / site equipment in all areas of the business, to ensure consistent smooth running and limited downtime through working with the Hygiene Manager and Production Manager and any other manager or members of staff that you will be working with.

Main Purpose of the Job:

  • Day to day work to be carried out to ensure 'emergency' situations do not arise through lack of planning and communication, ensuring work carried out has minimal effect on production efficiencies.

  • Carry out autonomous breakdown tasks and preventative maintenance tasks competently and correctly, recording work carried out in appropriate documentation / data base during or after your shift. (No Paper Work or logging of maintenance tasks to be carried over they need to be rectified on the day)

  • Complete all records and paperwork for specific work legibly and accurately (e.g. PPM's, Quality records, maintenance schedules and return to work forms).

  • To be aware of production programs, understanding the importance of running to plan and using management downtime set out in the schedules to carry out improvement work.

  • You will be expected to gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of the site and processes, machinery and associated equipment.

  • The business may setup additional training away from the site that you may be required to attend.

  • Priorities responsibilities to ensure housekeeping and hygiene standards are at an acceptable standard before and after your work to comply to good manufacturing practices.

  • Keep workshop and surrounding areas clean and tidy at all times.

  • Assist in the research, implementation and completion of projects to targets set

  • Working to Reduce production waste and downtime time where possible.

  • Conduct Mechanical and Electrical fault finding and rectification to your ability and training.

  • Ensure spares stocks are identified and maintained and reported to the Site head of engineering.

  • Conduct a smooth handover between shifts to ensure another engineer coming on shift understands what is required to do

  • You will be expected to work with external contractors and making sure they adhere to PDM best practices and Health and Safety requirements whilst being on site.

  • Ensure all tools, materials and equipment is returned promptly to their correct locations.

  • Ensure hygiene and housekeeping standards are maintained during all working activities.

  • Working closely with other departments to maintain a good working and friendly environment.


  • Health & Safety Responsibilities:

    Highlighting any Health and Safety Concerns immediately to the Health and Safety Manager / Site Head Engineer and or Factory Manager / Supervisor at the time of issue

    To comply to Health and Safety regulations and making sure you adhered to and are followed by you and other members of staff.

    To be responsible for your own safety and do not jeopardise the health and safety of others.

    To follow safe working procedures and safety rules.

    To follow the correct procedure if accidents occur.

    Do not interfere with things provided for your safety.

    To co-operate with managers in maintaining a safe place of work.

    To ensure suitable personal protective equipment is worn where appropriate

    Quality & Documentation Responsibilities:

    Follow policies and procedures in conjunction with the food quality management system and retailer-specific technical standards.

    Environmental Responsibilities:

    To reduce environmental waste where possible by e.g. turning off machines when not in use, turning off lights etc.

    To correct, or report, poor environmental practices or conditions.

    To make suggestions to improve any aspect of environmental management.

    To report instances of energy and other waste and act to correct poor environmental procedures.

    To understand and comply with company policy about the environment.
