Full Job Description

Our people provide essential infrastructure services through long-term framework agreements to the water and wastewater sectors in the UK and Ireland. The Water Division provides a broad range of technical capabilities to our clients ranging from asset condition assessment to design, build, commissioning, and completion. Please note there will be an Assessment Centre which will take place on 18th June 2024. You must be able to attend to be considered for the programme.

Specific activities relating to Water Mains and Service Laying:

  • Installing water services and ancillary structures, you will prepare for and install water mains or services using a variety of jointing techniques

  • You will also learn how to repair faults and other damage to water mains and services.

  • Conform with productive working practices and completing the work in accordance with the programme of work.

  • Interpret and follow verbal and written work instructions from supervisors and site managers.

  • Access, interpret and use drawings and specifications.

  • Use and maintain power tools and equipment (including compactor plates, boning rods, portable power tools, levels, straight edges, lines, pins and laser equipment)

  • Form and reinstate excavations and surfaces to sub-grades, sub-bases and road bases.

    You will ideally have a basic level of numeracy and literacy and will undertake Functional Skills Level 1 as part of the apprenticeship programme, which is equivalent to GCSE qualifications

  • You will need to demonstrate an interest and enthusiasm to work outdoors

  • You must possess a high degree of manual dexterity demonstrated using hand tools.

  • As a qualified Water Network Operative, you may be required to drive a company van, to commute to client sites.

  • You must be able to travel to your home depot or work site every day, potentially at unsocial hours, and must possess a full manual driving license by the end of the apprenticeship programme

    Morrison Water Services is recruiting for a number of Apprentice Water Network Operatives, to work on our Caledonia Water Alliance contract.


  • Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA) is a joint venture alliance between Aecom and Morrison Water Services (MWS), supporting the delivery of Scottish Water's SR21 Capital Investment Programme.

    CWA are responsible for the delivery of a pan Scotland £700M water and wastewater infrastructure programme over a 6-year alliance framework.

    This is a fantastic opportunity to gain recognised and accredited qualifications whilst you earn and gain a vast amount of experience within a highly respected company.

    With the support of your work-based mentor, your responsibilities will increase as your skills and technical knowledge develop. You will learn alongside our experienced squads on how to be responsible for the daily control, management, and coordination of construction activities on site to ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget and to the required safety, environmental and quality standards.

    Morrison Water Services part of the M Group Services Water Division are the leading service provider in the water and wastewater infrastructure sectors in the UK. As a division, we employ circa 3000 people across the UK and we are looking for aspiring people like you, who are keen to continue their career within the Water Industry.

    Apprentices will undergo training at a variety of CWA Project Sites and the Stepps Office. Here you will acquire the basic knowledge, skills and competence to enable them to work productively within the water network. The remainder of your time will be spent under supervision on site at Caledonia Water Alliance contract.

    Apprenticeship Development Scheme in Depth

    As an Apprentice within Morrison Water Services, you will undertake both a technical programme as well as our internal EU Skills endorsed Apprenticeship Development Scheme (ADS) programme.

    The ADS programme is a blend of online and face to face sessions, involving the development of soft skills and being supported by mental health/pastoral care. Some elements of the scheme are residential, which will take place around England. Therefore, applicants must be prepared to travel and stay away from home.

    The remainder of your time will be spent with our training provider or under their supervision on site.

    Whilst on your apprentice programme, your travel to and from the providers' locations, hotel accommodation, and all meals will be provided.
